Cathal Cleary is an award winning theatre director from Roscommon and the Artistic Director of Mommo Theatre. He has worked across Ireland and the UK for companies such as Druid, Young Vic, The Abbey and Donmar Warehouse.
Since 2017, he has directed ten plays including six world premieres which have won multiple awards including an Irish Times Irish Theatre Award, Dublin Fringe Award, Vault Festival Award, two Stewart Parker Awards and Papatango New Writing Prize. These productions included Furniture by Sonya Kelly (Druid), Porcelain by Margaret Perry (Abbey), The Half Of It by Karen Cogan (Mommo, Dublin Fringe), Madhouse by Una McKevitt and PJ Gallagher (Abbey, Dublin Fringe), Trestle by Stewart Pringle (Papatango, Southwark Playhouse) and Blue Thunder by Padraic Walsh (Vault Festival).
His London credits include being selected as the JMK Director's Award Winner in 2011 for which he directed Enda Walsh's Disco Pigs at the Young Vic. He directed Arthur Miller’s The Last Yankee for the Print Room Theatre and from 2014 - 2016 he took residency at the Donmar Warehouse as Trainee Artistic Director. He also worked as an assistant director at the National Theatre, Old Vic, Lyric Hammersmith and on the West End.
In 2020 he was Artist-in-Residence at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris and received the Theatre Bursary Award from Arts Council Ireland.
