About the artist

John Beattie is a visual artist originally from Co. Donegal, and lives and work in Dublin. Beattie’s practice takes the form of still and moving-image staged productions through a cinematic lens. His work re-addresses cultural narratives, events, and reconstructs the malleable medium of time.

He has exhibited widely nationally and internationally and is working towards a museum solo show titled RECONSTRUCTING MONDRIAN, at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. Recently, Beattie exhibited a solo show at the RHA, Dublin, curated by Patrick Murphy, and screened new work for the Living Canvas project – a new cultural initiative, and large-scale outdoor LED screen, installed at Wilton Park, Dublin. This project was commissioned by IPUT Real Estate, in collaboration with the RHA, DCC Arts Office, and Algorithm. Additionally, Beattie has been awarded numerous Artist in Residence programs such as at the Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris; the apexart Fellowship, New York; IMMA, Dublin; Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Dublin; the RHA, Dublin; Temple Bar Gallery & Studio, Dublin; and is currently Artist in Residence at the National Archives of Ireland.

Beattie’s practice has been supported by Project and Bursary Awards from the Arts Council of Ireland, Donegal County Council, and the Arts Humanities Research Board. His work is featured in public and private collections such as at The Arts Council of Ireland, the Office of Public Works, and the Department of Education. He has taught nationally and internationally at third level institutions and with alternative art educational models, such as, Art School, founded and curated by Jennie Guy. In addition, Beattie worked at Fire Station Artists’ Studios as part of their dedicated management team from 2009 - 2022.
